What is IGIA10?
The Icelandic Gaming Industry Awards 2010 is the title for the first Icelandic competition in designing, creating and/or implementing a game of any sort. It is organized and held by IGI, the Icelandic Gaming Industry, which is mainly comprised of industry experts and the companies they work for. IGIA10 is made possible by the support of IGI member companies as well as those companies, institutions, organisations and individuals providing facilities, support and of course the awards themselves. All work by those parties is donated freely by them.

When is IGIA10?
IGIA10 is launched on the 5th of November 2009 and runs until late March 2010 (exact dates to be announced). As long as the final submission deadline has not passed, you can still register.

Why is it called IGIA10?
IGIA10 stands for Icelandic Gaming Industry Awards 2010, as the awards themselves will be handed out in 2010, even though the competition starts in 2009.

Who can take part and is it really free?
Anyone can take part. You can sign up as an individual and work on your game idea or you can get a few friends together to improve your odds of creating the best game. To take part you also have to have registered at www.igi.is and joined the IGIA10 group there. This does not equal submission of an entry, but is an important pre-requisite for submission.

How do I register?
To register for IGIA10 all you have to do is sign up at www.igi.is and join the IGIA10 group. You can then follow all the information for IGIA10 and decide in March 2010 whether you wish to submit your entry.

What if I don't know anything about games?
You don't really have to know anything about games, but it helps if you are interested by them. There will be various workshops throughout the competition process which will aim to introduce you to some of the key skills required. You do not have to attend these, but they may help you create a better entry and teach you about the game creation process and the gaming industry.
You also don't have to commit to anything until you submit your entry. You can take part in the process and learn about it to see if you get any ideas and if it is really something for you.

What if I don't have a great idea for a game?
By seeking out information about game design and game creation (online, in books or by attending the free IGIA10 workshops) you may come up with a great idea, even if you don't have one now. You can also join up with a group of participants so that together you can create a great entry. Your strength may even lie elsewhere than the actual game designing process - such as working on the storyline, implementing the game, creating graphics etc
You also don't have to commit to anything until you submit your entry. You can take part in the process and learn about it to see if you get any ideas and if it is really something for you.

Can anyone create a game?
Absolutely. On this site you can find various links that will help you to learn about games and game design. If you feel you don't have all the skills required, you can assemble a group of people that have those skills or you can choose to teach yourself those skills (for which the various online resources and the IGIA10 workshops should prove very valuable to you). If that still seems a bit too much, you can always try your hands at the many game engines and games creation software available, some of which we point you towards via our resources section.

What do I have to submit?
You can submit anything from a basic design of a game (of any kind) to a prototype or even a fully implemented game. The material must be submitted in digital format and should be created by you or your group. See the rules of submission and Terms and Conditions for further details. It will also strengthen your submission if you already have plans of creating or interfacing with a community. This can be anything from an open path for users to submit ideas and thoughts, to an actively maintained forum or even a full connection to a social network. You also don't have to commit to anything until you submit your entry. You can take part in the process and learn about it to see if you get any ideas and if it is really something for you.

How can I win?
To improve your odds of winning, you can attend the workshops and try to learn more about how you can make a great game. You can also assemble a group of participants with different skillsets to work on a game idea together.

What can I win?
The winning entry will get the chance to make more of the participant's skills and entry, by receiving a state of the art computer generously donated by Opin Kerfi ( www.ok.is ) and admittance into the first term of Vidskiptasmidjan (fall term of 2010) for free*, as well as support from IGI. The winning entry will effectively be launched into an incubator program to make the most of the entry or any other game related ideas. All participants will also get numerous opportunities to learn from and network with the industry experts.

Why is this all in English?
English is the official language of IGI and therefore also of IGIA10. The key reasons for this are to be found in the internationality of this industry. Most companies within IGI either include non-Icelandic staff or collaborate with non-Icelandic companies. Gaming conferences are generally held in English and most material you can find on game design and game creation will be in English. If you are promoting a game, you will in most cases not limit yourself to the small Icelandic market, but rather the vast market available to us via the internet. It is therefore very important within the industry to be able to work with the English language.

I have more questions.
If your questions have not been answered yet, by all means post them here and we will do our best to answer them :)

*subject to acceptance of the candidate by a representative of Vidskiptasmidjan
