Some great pointers for beginners can be found at WikiHow:

An interesting free eBook that might interest some of you, titled "How to Make a Video Game"

Some starting thoughts about game programming:

These should provide some help as a starting point, but we are more than likely to add some more as time passes :) if you know of (or come across) some other good ones, feel free to share them with us here.

If you are considering Flash games you might want to look into some ActionScript libraries to help you at the starting stages. One of those (but not necessarily any better than any other library) is Flixel, found at: http://flixel.org/. Keep in mind however, that (as with all libraries etc) if you use Flixel in your submitted entry, you must make it very clear in your submission that you are doing so, including which libraries you are using, for what purpose and what the split is between your original work and the libraries. You must also look into the licensing details very carefully for each of these, to be sure that you are allowed to use it, modify it, re-distribute it and even use it in commercial applications. In general, you should never use any material created by others without at least a minimum of acknowledgement and thanks to all, as well as of course paying careful attention to all licensing details.

Later on you might want to look into sophisticated games engines like the very popular Torque from GarageGames . Those kind of engines are very good and very valuable when you are making commercial games. However they are not free and therefore not really a good option when you are starting out. For now, it's sufficient just to know of their existence.

I stumbled onto these two projects last week, both are free and open source.

A link to the Mod Database website, where people can find more information about games and game engines that support mods, news in the modding community, as well as have a look at the large majority of the mods both released and currently in development.

Very disappointed Jói - I was sure you were pointing to a secret database by the Ministry of Defense... ;)

Another link that may be very useful for some:
Gamasutra/Gamelogicdesign.com -> Selecting your next Game Engine

Also check out the Features section at Game Career Guide, which can often be very educational and useful.

GameDev have a whole section of useful articles and resources titled "For Beginners" that should be an extremely useful starting point. Also check out their similarly themed sections on "Game Programming" and "General Game Design".
